General Accountability

Newfoundland and Labrador intends to examine the recycling of fluorescent lamps. If it can be determined that recycling of mercury-containing fluorescent tubes is not cost prohibitive, the Government will encourage and promote recycling as a means of implementing the CWS. However, there are no mercury recycling companies currently operating in this province and transportation costs may make such efforts cost prohibitive. Consequently, implementation of the CWS will likely be through voluntary efforts to encourage building owners to use low mercury content fluorescent tubes.

Public Role/Transparency

Since reductions in mercury content is to be done through manufacturers of fluorescent tubes which will be tracked at the federal level, provincial accounting of tube content is not expected. Citizens and corporations may choose to select low mercury lamps and so contribute to the achievement of this CWS.

Access to Information

Newfoundland and Labrador will not be providing a public record of either recycling rates or mercury content of fluorescent lamps that would be accessible to the public.

Verifiable Progress

Newfoundland and Labrador will have no specific program for which progress will be verifiable.
