Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent has submitted a five year operating plan for Crown Land in Forest Management District One, the Avalon Peninsula. The plan covers the operating period from April 2002 to March 2007. The plan describes past forestry activities, the allocation of wood supply and harvesting, silviculture activities, road construction and environmental protection.

  • The plan describes a potential harvest of 73,000 cubic meters of timber each year by domestic and commercial harvesting. Construction of 21 kilometers of new forest access road and decommissioning of 14 kilometers of access road are proposed. Also proposed are 2,200 hectares of silviculture treatment consisting mainly of planting and various types of thinning of natural forest regrowth.
  • February 15, 2002 – The undertaking was registered.
  • March 22, 2002 – Public comments are due.
  • April 18, 2002 – The Minister releases the project from further environmental assessment subject to conditions.
