Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent proposes to construct a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)storage facility in Happy Valley – Goose Bay at the existing storage yard at the North Side Diesel Generating Station. The storage facility will be a new pre-engineered, pre-assembled metal building measuring approximately 3.8 metres long, 3.1 metres wide, and 2.8 metres high. The building will be supported on a concrete foundation and have a secondary-containment system. The facility will accommodate PCB contaminated electrical equipment and transformer oil that has been removed from service in Hydro’s Transmission and Rural Operations (Labrador) operating area.

It is anticipated that the storage facility will be required for a period of 25 years or until all PCB contaminated electrical equipment in Labrador area has been removed from service. Work on the facility is anticipated to commence in October 2002.
