Project Description:

The proponent proposes to expand theexisting seal processing plant at South Dildo to enable the tanning ofseal pelts. Presently the site contains a storage building, cookerbuilding, salt shed, production building, sawdust building, office andsecurity office. The existing production building will be extended tohouse parts of the tannery. The phasing in of the tanning operation willtake place over a period of 10 years. The start up phase will involve thetanning of approximately 200 seal pelts per day.

• June 3, 2002 – The undertaking was registered.
• July 8, 2002 – Public comments were due.
• July 15, 2002 – The Minister’s decision was due.
• August 28, 2002 – The Minister’s released the project from further environmental assessment.
