Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent proposes to construct a new building which will house a fiberglassing, painting and sandblasting operation for marine vessels. This facility will be located at the site of Dawe’s Welding and Sons Ltd. current operation at the Marine Service Centre, Beach Hill Road, Harbour Grace. The existing facilities are situated on two hectares of waterfront property. The proposed building will be approximately 160 feet long, 118 feet wide and 55 feet high, with a concrete foundation and steel frame. The building is proposed to be airtight, and will include a ventilation system with filtration equipment to remove fibreglass particles and other odorous substances. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2003. At present, fibreglass work on larger vessels is undertaken in two temporary structures located adjacent to the Marine Service Centre.
