Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent and Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited has entered into an agreement that has transferred harvesting rights for all hardwoods on company limits in District 14, to the Crown. The amendment is necessary to identify areas that will be designated for hardwood management which are not identified in the current Five Year Plan. Hardwood management will include the designation of areas where domestic wood cutters and small commercial operators will be issued permits to selectively harvest hardwoods for sawlogs and fuelwood. Silvicultural activities directed toward hardwood management will also be scheduled. It is estimated that approximately 7500m3 of hardwood will be harvested on an annual basis.

  • October 14, 2003 – The undertaking was registered.
  • November 18, 2003 – Public comments are due.
  • November 28, 2003 – The Minister’s decision is due.
  • February 13, 2004 – The Minister announced that the undertaking has been released from further environmental assessment.
