Experimental Spray Using Spinosad Against Balsam Fir Sawfly

Proponent: Dow AgroScience Canada Inc.

Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent (Dow AgroSciences) in conjunction with the Canadian Forest Service (CFS) propose to carry out an experimental research application of a biological control agent Spinosad (the active ingredient in Entrust 80W) against the balsam fir sawfly. Applications would be made aerially on three plots of 15 hectares each (45 hectares total) of selected silviculturally treated forest stands, forecast to receive moderate to severe balsam fir sawfly defoliation. The registration document submitted provides background information on current balsam fir sawfly infestations, information on the product Spinosad (Entrust 80W), details of the spray program and schedule. It is proposed to apply Spinosad to three plots located on the northwest side of Deer Lake near Ninth Brook (across Deer Lake from Pynns Brook). Treatment is proposed to begin in mid to late July.
