Glenwood Composting Facility

Proponent: North Atlantic Lumber Inc.

Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent proposes to develop an open windrow composting facility to compost existing bark and sawdust waste through the regional importation and addition of fish/seafood offal and/or manures to assist in the elimination of the existing bark and sawdust pile. The proposed facility will be located on the North Atlantic Lumber Inc. property approximately 2 kilometres west of Glenwood. No buildings or additional infrastructure will be required. Trucks transporting offal, manures and compost will use the existing mill road. The facility will expand from 0.5 hectares to 2 hectares in three phases. Appropriate composting recipes of wood waste and offal/manure will be developed and refined during the pilot phase. Existing staff and equipment will be used for the pilot phase but additional staff may be required during phases two and three. The pilot phase is anticipated to begin in the autumn of 2004.
