2005 Balsam Fir Sawfly Experimental Spray Using NeabNPV

Proponent: Natural Resources Canada, Canadian Forest Service

Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The Canadian Forest Service propose to carry out an experimental research application of a highly species-specific microbial biological control agent (balsam fir sawfly Nucleopolyhedrovirus – NeabNPV) against it’s natural host the balsam fir sawfly. Applications would be made aerially on up to 5,000 hectares of mostly selected silviculturally treated forest stands, forecast to receive moderate to severe balsam fir sawfly defoliation in 2005 and at the leading edge of infestation. The registration document submitted provides background information on the current infestations, control options, information on the product NeabNPV (which goes by registered trade name – Abietiv), details of the actual spray program and schedule. The proposal to apply NeabNPV is for a spray block located on the northwest side of Deer Lake that extends to Governors Pond and southwest side of Bonne Bay Big Pond, in western Newfoundland. Treatment is proposed to begin in mid-July.
