Project Description:

The proponent proposes to develop a crushed granite rock quarry on a site approximately 900 hectares in size located to the north of Belleoram in Belle Bay to supply raw material to international markets. The granite will be quarried and crushed on site and loaded onto ships via a conveyor belt and shipped to market. It is estimated that 2,000,000 tonnes of aggregate will be shipped in the first year of operation. Development will include road construction, a marine wharf, core sampling crusher and associated equipment setup, removal of overburden, drilling, blasting and crushing for transport by bulk carrier to market.

  • April 5, 2006 – The undertaking was registered.
  • May 15, 2006 – Public comments are due.
  • May 20, 2006 – The Minister’s decision is due.
  • June 8, 2006 – The Minster announced an Environmental Preview Report is required.
  • June 23, 2006 – The Minister appoints an Environmental Assessment Committee.
  • July 12, 2006 – The Minister announced the EPR Guidelines have been issued to the proponent.
  • Nov 20, 2006 – The Minister announced the EPR has been submitted.
  • Jan 26, 2007 – The Minister announced that the EPR has been approved.
  • July 27, 2007 – The Minister accepts the Environmental Protection Plan and the Spill Contingency Plan as satisfactory.
