Summary of Environmental Assessment Process
Project Description:
The proponent proposes an expansion of the existing mink fur farm from its current size of 5,000 female breeders to 15,000 female breeders at Long Point Hill, off Route 80, between the communities of Cavendish and Heart’s Delight-Islington, Trinity Bay . The proposed expansion would produce approximately 75,000 kits annually with approx. 5 kits per litter. To accommodate the expansion construction includes: 2 new mink sheds (measuring 150 metres by 14 metres, and, 60 metres by 9 metres each), a cold storage facility (30 metres by 18 metres), and a shavings shed. Approximately 2-3 acres of land from the existing farm site will be used to accommodate the expansion. Construction is proposed to start in the fall of 2006.
- July 11, 2006 – The undertaking was registered.
- August 16, 2006 – Public comments are due.
- August 25, 2006 – The Minister’s decision is due.
- November 3, 2006 – The Minister announced the project has been released from further environmental assessment review, subject to conditions.
