Project Description:

The Department of Natural Resources – Forestry Services Branch proposes to carry out an operational control program against the hemlock looper on the Northern Peninsula using the federally registered insect growth regulator Mimic™(tebufenozide).Aerial application is proposed on up to approximately 4,500 hectares using fixed wing aircraft, within areas forecasted to have moderate to severe defoliation by the insect.Three general locations for treatment are located south and east of Squid Cove near Squid Cove Pond; northeast of Castors River towards Three Mile Lake Park ; and near Ten Mile Lake / Round Lake .The registration document provides background information on the infestation, control options, proposed treatment using Mimic™, background information on the product, safety precautions, a sample of the 2006 Operators License illustrating types of requirements, and a proposed 2007 operating schedule.Treatment is proposed to begin late June, but is dependent on seasonal development of the insect which is weather related.

  • June 22, 2007 – The Minister’s decision is due.
  • July 4, 2007 – The Minister announced the project has been released from further environmental assessment review.
