Project Description:

The proposal is to operate a chitin/chitosan production facility and laboratory in Old Perlican, Trinity Bay. Waste material from shrimp and crab processing will be used to manufacture chitin. The facility will operate 24 hours/day for approximately eight months/year with a winter shutdown. The operation involves processing shrimp and crashells into a powder using potassium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid and water.Approximately 34,000 litres/day of effluent generated by the production process will be discharged into the municipal sewer. The proposed facility will be located inside an existing building in Old Perlican, which will be modified for chitin production.

  • May 6, 2008 – The undertaking was registered.
  • June 12, 2008 – Public comments are due.
  • June 20, 2008 – The Minister’s decision is due.
  • September 23, 2008 – The Minister appoints an environmental assessment committee.
  • October 9, 2008 – The Minister issues final Guidelines for the Environmental Preview Report.
  • January 16, 2009 – The proponent submits the Environmental Preview Report.
  • March 20, 2009 – The Minister accepts the EPR as satisfactory.
