Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proposal is to construct 33 kilometres of new trail to combine existing trails on the Burin Peninsula and create a 175 kilometre multipurpose trail. The proposed construction would start near the PowderHorn Mountain which is 11.9 kilometres due west of Boat Harbour West, Placentia Bay and the end at Point Rosie, which is 20 kilometres northeast of Garnish, Fortune Bay. Other trails in the system include the PowderHorn Trail, The Garnish, Point Rosie Trail, the Garnish Pond Trail System. These routes will be used for activities such as hiking, motocross biking, cross country skiing, all terrain vehicles, and snowmobiles. The Proponent plans to complete the loop over a five year period.

  • September 29, 2008 – Public comments are due.
  • September 29, 2008 – The Minister’s decision is due.
  • November 7, 2008 – The Minister released the project from further environmental assessment.
