Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent proposes to construct a 600 metre rifle range in Stephenville, NL. The range will be owned by the Town of Stephenville but used by the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Wildlife and Fisheries Officers, Department of National Defence (DND) and registered members of the general public. The range will be located approximately one kilometre north of the Stephenville town limits on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland. The construction activities will include a gravel access road; administration/storage building; lunchroom; sheltered shooting stand; 600 metre long shooting field; target holders; signage; stop butt (bullet catch); and a gravel parking lot. A two-phase power line and telephone line will be installed along the access road to the site. Construction of the project is scheduled to begin in April 2009 and to be completed in June 2009.

  • January 26, 2009 – The Minister’s decision is due.
  • March 13, 2009 – The undertaking is released.
