Arnold’s Cove Breakwater

Proponent: Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Small Craft Harbours Branch

Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent proposes to construct a 160 metre long by 45 metre wide rubblemound breakwater in Arnold’s Cove. The breakwater will be constructed of core stone, filter stone and armour stone of varying sizes that will be transported to the site. The area adjacent to the breakwater will be infilled using material such as core and filter stone to develop a laydown and service area. The material will be placed using an excavator working above the high water mark, from the shoreline/breakwater structure or atop a barge. The contractor will determine the exact construction methodology and source of the armour stone. Construction activities will be carried out using an excavator, dump trucks and manual labour and is expected to require 5 months to complete. Commencement of the project is subject to Small Craft Harbour Branch priorities and funding and regulatory approval.
