Twillingate Shrimp Shell Waste Processing

Proponent: Eastern Star Group Canada Ltd.

Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent plans to obtain shrimp shell waste material from seafood processingplants in the Twillingate area to extract the protein for use in aquaculture feed and dry theremaining shells for shipping to markets in China. The process involves removing thewater content using very high pressure and through a centrifuge process removing theprotein component. This protein component will be frozen and sold to aquaculture feedproducers. The remaining semi-dried shells will undergo further drying in a large oil-fireddrum dryer. This dried product will then be compressed, wrapped and containerized forshipping on a weekly basis. The proposed facility will be constructed on a site currentlyowned by the Twillingate Harbour Authority located across the harbour from the NotreDame Seafoods processing plant. Shrimp shell waste material will be off-loaded into largefish boxes and trucked to the Eastern Star Group processing plant.
