Project Description:

The proposal is to operate a chitin/chitosan production facility and laboratory in Bay de Verde. Waste material from shellfish processing will be used to manufacture chitin. The operation involves processing shellfish waste into a powder using potassium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid and water. The existing shellfish processing plant in Bay de Verde will be expanded to accommodate the proposed chitin production facility. The facility will operate 24 hours/day for approximately eight months of the year, with a winter shutdown. Construction is expected to start in the fall of 2011.

• April 20, 2011 – The undertaking was registered.
• May 25, 2011 – Public comments are due.
• June 4, 2011 – The Minister’s decision is due.
• August 29, 2011 – Environmental Preview Report Required.
• October 14, 2011 – Environmental Assessment Committee Appointed.
• November 4, 2011 – EPR Guidelines Issued
• October 16, 2015 – The Minister announced that the project is withdrawn.
