Huguette Lake Sand Quarry Extension

Proponent: Allard Distributing Ltd.

Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent has submitted a proposal for the development of a three-hectare sand quarry which will be an extension to an existing sand quarry site. The quarry site is approximately two kilometres north of kilometer 0.5 on Route 500, the Trans Labrador Highway (TLH) and 28 kilometres west of Labrador City. The site is accessed via the TLH and an existing gravel access road. The existing adjacent quarry deposit is nearly exhausted and it is anticipated that there will be a significant demand for quarry material with the increase in mining activity in the area. The proposed quarry will produce a product for construction, mining and commercial use in Labrador West. Operations will include clearing, grubbing, quarrying, screening of materials and transporting the processed aggregate to the local area. Construction of the quarry is slated to begin in 2013 and will potentially operate for five years.
