Proponent: Forest Service, Dept. Fisheries, Forestry and Agrifoods

Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent has submitted a proposal for a Five-Year Forest Management Plan for Forest Management District 21 (FMD 21). FMD 21 is approximately 1.9 million hectares and extends from Hawke Bay on the Labrador coast, west along the Paradise and St. Pauls Rivers and the Quebec-Labrador border and south including all islands to Hawke Bay. The plan describes timber harvesting operations, construction of access roads and silviculture activities. The proponent proposes to harvest approximately 243,000 cubic metres of softwood and construct approximately 14 kilometres of primary forest road that will maintain or expand the existing commercial forest industry and allow domestic home heating. Commercial harvesting will be carried out manually and with shortwood harvesters and forwarders. Domestic harvesting will be done with chainsaws and extraction by snowmobile and all-terrain vehicles. The plan covers the period from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2021.
