Summary of Environmental Assessment Process

Project Description:

The proponent intends to amend five separate operating areas in this District:

  • Pine Pond (East of Kings Point); 4,000 cubic metres of timber remaining from previous operations will be harvested during winter seasons by a small sawmill operator over the January 2002 to March 2005 period.
  • Shoal Pond (West of Springdale); 5,000 cubic metres of hardwoods will be harvested by a commercial fuelwood operation over the January 2002 to March 2005 period in areas previously logged for softwoods .
  • Loon Pond (South Brook area); 4,000 cubic metres of primarily hardwoods will be harvested by a commercial sawlog and fuelwood operation over the January 2002 to March 2005 period in areas previously logged for softwoods .
  • Bear Pond (West of Burlington); 5,000 cubic metres of sawlogs and pulpwood will be harvested primarily in fall and winter seasons by a commercial operator over the January 2002 to March 2005 period.
  • 28 Ridge (North of Baie Verte); 6 km of access road (2 km each of the next three years) and one bridge will be constructed to access 30,000 cubic metres of wood in a new area. The project was registered on November 5, 2001, public comments are due December 10, and the Minister’s decision is due December 20.

The proponent is proposing to construct an ATV trail from Route 210 near Frenchman’s Cove to a private remote cottage. The proposed trail would be approximately 5.0 km long and constructed to a standard suitable for 4-wheeler ATVs and snowmobiles.

  • November 5, 2001 – The undertaking was registered.
  • February 11, 2002 – The Minister announced that the undertaking was conditionally released from environmental assessment.
