St. Lawrence Fluorspar Mine Reactivation

Project Description:

The proposal is to reactivate the St. Lawrence fluorspar mine, located on the southern tip of the Burin Peninsula. The proposed project includes: underground mine development of the previously mined Tarefare and Blue Beach North veins; upgrades to existing mill; construction of a tailings management facility at Shoal Cove Pond; and, construction of a new marine terminal including a 250 metre long deep water wharf in the Blue Beach area. The proposed mine concentrate production rates will be 120,000 to 180,000 tonnes of fluorspar per year. Site preparation and construction is scheduled to begin by the spring of 2010, and full operations by the fall of 2011.

  • May 22, 2009 – Public comments are due.
  • May 29, 2009 – The Minister’s decision is due.
  • July 8, 2009 – Environmental Preview Report Required.
  • July 15, 2009 – The Minister Appointed an EA Committee.
  • September 16, 2009 – Guidelines were issued to the Proponent.
  • November 10, 2009 – Environmental Preview Report Submitted.
  • February 1, 2010 – EPR requires additional work.
  • March 29, 2010 – EPR Addendum Submitted
  • October 28, 2010 – The undertaking was released.
  • September 12, 2012 – The Minister approved the Environmental Effects Monitoring Plan (EEMP).
  • October 15, 2012 – The Minister approved the Environmental Protection Plan (EPP).
