Project Description:

The proponent has submitted a Five-Year Operating Plan for Forest Management Districts17 and 18. These districts encompass the majority of the Great Northern Peninsula,commencing at the northern boundary of Gros Morne National Park on the west side of thepeninsula and at Great Cat Arm on the eastern side of the peninsula. These two districtsshare common ecoregion characteristics and for forest management purposes have beencombined to form Planning Zone 8. The proponent plans to manage the harvest ofapproximately 625,000 cubic metres of timber, construct approximately 48 kilometres ofprimary forest access roads and conduct silviculture activities in District 17. In District 18the proponent plans to manage the harvest of approximately 580,000 cubic metres oftimber, construct approximately 135 kilometres of primary forest access roads and conductsilviculture activities. Approval of this undertaking will maintain the existing commercialforest industry in the region as well as allow domestic timber harvest for home heating.
