- Real-time Water Quality Monitoring at proposed Voisey’s Bay Nickel Company Ltd. (VBNC) Commercial Processing Plant in Long Harbour
One real-time water quality monitoring probe has been installed in Rattling Brook in the vicinity of the proposed VBNC commercial processing plant. The purpose of this probe is to monitor various water quality parameters on a near real time basis, thus providing important baseline water quality data prior to development.

- Real Time Water Quality Monitoring at the Aur Resources Duck Pond Mine
Two surface water probes have been installed in brooks with natural flow near each end of the tailings pond at the Duck Pond mine site. In addition, a groundwater probe has been installed within 100m of the tailings pond. The purpose of these probes is to monitor various water quality parameters on a near real time basis, thus providing early detection for changes in water quality in the immediate vicinity of the tailings pond and to take appropriate mitigative measures if needed.

- Ambient water quality data from over 100 Newfoundland and Labrador sites sampled under a joint Federal-Provincial Water Quality Monitoring Agreement (WQMA) is now available to the general public through an innovative Geographic Information System (GIS) based Federal-Provincial website called the Canada-Newfoundland/Labrador Aqua Link (CANAL).

- Permits to Operate for Water Distribution Systems, Water Treatment Plants, Sewage Collection Systems and Sewage Treatment Plants are required under Section 38 of the Water Resources Act. These permits are an integral part of the Department’s regulatory program directed at ensuring public health and environmental protection. Forms are now available for use by communities to assist them in meeting their obligations as required under the Permit to Operate. It will also allow communities to keep reliable operational and maintenance records of their water and sewerage systems.
