Employer Benefits
According to research conducted by the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum (CAF), the benefits of apprenticeship to employers includes:
- improved productivity;
- improved quality of services and finished products;
- improved skills of employees;
- improved health and safety;
- reduced employee turnover and costs;
- increased competitiveness; and
- ability to plan for the future.
Note: (CAF) is a non-profit organization that works collaboratively to support innovative Canadian apprenticeship systems and policies with a view to developing a highly-skilled, mobile skilled trades workforce.
Employers have the responsibility to:
- complete employer section of the memorandum of understanding (MOU);
- provide high quality work experiences;
- document required work experience when skill competence is achieved, otherwise the apprentice will not receive credits;
- release apprentices to attend training at each level of the apprenticeship program;
- ensure a certified journeyperson (recognized by the Apprenticeship and Trades Certification Division) is on staff in the same trade as the apprentice; and
- maintain communication with an Apprenticeship Program Officer, and notify them of any changes in company contact information, the apprentice’s employment status, or staffing that affect the apprentice’s supervision.
