Blaster
- is not an apprenticeship trade
- is divided into levels of skill (level one = entry level; level three = highest level)
- requires a combination of work experience, proficiency in specified skills, and the successful completion of certification examinations to progress from level one to level three
To work as a blaster in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, a person must hold a certificate of competency issued by the Apprenticeship and Trades Certification Division, at a minimum of level one.
Training
- is required for level one certification only
- consists of twelve weeks of theory and practical training (addressing both drilling and blasting activities)
- after successful completion of training, students write the level one certification exam

Examinations and Certification
Blaster is a provincially designated occupation, thus examinations must be written in Newfoundland and Labrador. The certification is valid for this province, and the individual must meet the regulatory requirements for examinations.

Certificate Renewal or Replacement
If a certificate needs to be renewed, or has been lost/damaged, the blaster may apply for a renewal or replacement by submitting an application form. A fee is also required. CLICK HERE to pay the fee.
Legislation
The blaster occupation is governed by part XIX of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

A blaster advisory committee, with representatives from industry, the Apprenticeship and Trades Certification Division, Service NL, and training provider representatives, has been established to address issues specific to blaster training, certification and regulation in Newfoundland and Labrador.
