Level: An interval of work experience and in-school training, established in hours and set by regulation, that form a portion of the term of an apprenticeship. A level is approximately 1800 hours in duration.
Level Exam: A multiple-choice examination to test whether an apprentice has successfully completed a level of training.
Purpose of Level Exams Preparing for a Level Exam (video)
- test knowledge gained from in-school training and work experience;
- ensure apprentices meet occupational standards set by industry;
- familiarize apprentices with exams which mirror Red Seal exams;
- increase success rates of apprentices attempting Red Seal exams; and
- use as a Recognition of Prior Learning tool to test knowledge and give credit for learning.

Level Exam Scheduling
- scheduled at the end of a period of training, and administered with the use of a computer;
- exam invigilator provides access to level exam website;
- apprentices permitted four (4) hours to complete level exam.
Level Exam Deferrals – if you are unable to write on the scheduled date
- a written request for a deferral must be submitted to blockexams@gov.nl.ca
- the request must include a rationale for a deferral. NOTE: the exam will not be scheduled before the group exam;
- the request will be reviewed, and the apprentice will be notified; and
- the exam will be rescheduled during regular monthly rewrites, written in ATCD Regional Offices.
Exam Day Preparation
- check with the instructor regarding the date, time and location of the level exam;
- bring a government issued Photo ID (i.e. Driver’s License);
- all materials for the exam will be provided; and
- arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for set up.
