Apprentice – for approval to write the exam: Preparing for a Red Seal Exam
- an apprentice must have the required work experience recorded;
- have the hours signed by a journeyperson mentor;
- have successfully completed the required in-school training;
- submit a Statement of Eligibility form; and
- pay a fee of $50.00 prior to writing an exam (instructions on form).

Trade Qualifier – for approval to write a the exam:
- a trade qualifier must submit a Trade Qualifier Application to be Examined form;
- submit a Record of Work Experiences form;
- pay a fee of $50.00 prior to submitting an application, (instructions on form);
- if approved, submit a Certification Exam Registration Form to schedule an exam; and
- pay a fee of $200.00 prior to writing an exam, (instructions on form).

Exam Scheduling
- Scheduled at the end of the period of training.
- Date and location of the exam will be confirmed prior to exam day.
- Candidates are allowed (4) hours to write a certification exam.
Exam Fees
- Only online payments are accepted.
- Fee to write a certification exam must be received a minimum of 36 hours prior to the exam date.

Exam Deferrals – if you are unable to write on the scheduled date
- a written request for a deferral must be submitted to certificationexams@gov.nl.ca a minimum of 3 business days prior to the exam date;
- the request must include a rationale for a deferral;
- the candidate will be notified of the decision by email;
- the exam may be rescheduled during regular monthly rewrites, written in ATCD Regional Offices; and
- no-shows are required to contact certificationexams@gov.nl.ca and must provide supporting rationale (i.e. Doctor’s note) prior to having an exam re-scheduled.
Exam Day Preparation
- bring a government issued Photo ID (i.e. Driver’s License);
- all exam materials will be provided; and
- arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for set-up.
