Level Exam – Accommodations

Level exam accommodations are available for apprentices with disabilities or language barriers, and are scheduled at the end of level training periods.

Accommodations include, but are not limited to:

  • extra time to complete the exam (maximum of 6 hours),Image of person writing exam
  • interpreter/reader,
  • quiet location,
  • translator,
  • splitting/chunking of exam,
  • scribe,
  • special exam formatting, and
  • assistive technology.

Application Process

Eligibility Criteria

  • Apprentices must have supporting documentation from a qualified professional (i.e. an individual who has the professional credentials to perform an assessment and give recommendations for accommodations).
  • Documentation submitted must be deemed acceptable by the Director of apprenticeship or delegated authority.

How To Apply

  • Apprentices must request exam accommodation(s) in writing to blockexams@gov.nl.ca
  • Apprenticeship Program Officers may also submit level exam accommodation requests on behalf of apprentices. Supportive medical or other professional documentation outlining the specific accommodation(s) required must be included with the request.
  • The accommodated exam may be conducted up to 20 days after the original date of the group exam.

Note: The personal information requested to support an accommodation request is being collected under the authority of section 61(c) of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015 for the purpose of determining your eligibility for accommodations. Deadline to Apply

A level exam accommodation request must be received no later than 3 weeks prior to a scheduled exam writing to ensure time for arrangements for the accommodation(s), (i.e. securing an invigilator, quiet space, and technology supports).

Decision-Making Process

  1. The Level Exam Program Coordinator reviews the accommodation request to ensure the accommodation(s) is identified, and the required documentation is included.
  2. If necessary, contact is made with the apprentice to obtain any missing information.
  3. A location and exam invigilator is secured for the accommodation(s).
  4. Approval is emailed to the apprentice within 5 business days of all documentation being received.
