Red Seal and Provincial Certification Exam – Accommodations

Red Seal and provincial certification exam accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities or language barriers.

Accommodations include but are not limited to:

  • extra time to complete the exam (maximum of 6 hours);Image of person writing exam
  • interpreter/reader;
  • quiet location;
  • scribe;
  • special exam formatting; and
  • assistive technology.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates must have supporting documentation from a qualified professional (i.e. an individual who has the professional credentials to complete a formal assessment and give recommendations for accommodations).
  • Documentation submitted must be deemed acceptable by the Director of apprenticeship or delegated authority.

How To Apply

  • Certification exam candidates must request exam accommodation(s) in writing to certificationexams@gov.nl.ca
  • Apprenticeship Program Officers may also submit certification exam accommodation requests on behalf of individuals. Supportive medical or other professional documentation outlining the specific accommodation(s) required must be included with the request.
  • The accommodated exam can be conducted up to 20 days after the original date of the group exam.

Note: The personal information requested to support an accommodation request is being collected under the authority of section 61(c) of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, 2015 for the purpose of determining your eligibility for accommodations. Deadline to Apply

A certification exam accommodation request must be received no later than 3 weeks prior to a scheduled exam to ensure time for arrangements for the accommodation(s). (i.e. securing an invigilator, quiet space, and technology supports).

  1. The Certification Exam Coordinator reviews accommodation request to ensure the accommodation(s) is identified, and required documentation is included.
  2. If necessary, contact is made with the candidate to secure any missing information.
  3. A location and exam invigilator is secured for the accommodation(s).
  4. Approval is emailed to the candidate within 5 business days of all documentation being received.
