Immunization is an important component of public health because it prevents many people from becoming sick with a communicable disease, reducing the risk to themselves and others. Newfoundland and Labrador enjoys a high uptake of immunization. This has been important for maintaining low rates of vaccine preventable diseases in the province. Getting vaccinated not only prevents you or your child from getting sick but also reduces the risk to those with less protection; like infants or people with chronic diseases.
Young children aged two months to five years receive their immunization from community health nurses at their local health unit. School-aged children are offered immunization programs delivered by community health nurses in special immunization clinics at your child’s school. Children at high risk may be eligible for additional vaccines. For more information consult your community health nurse in your local public health office.

Travel Immunizations
It is important to protect yourself against disease while travelling because the safety provided by Canadian health care services may be far away. Recommendations for vaccination are dependent on the location you are visiting. The Public Health Agency of Canada provides a set of guidelines for travelers that can be found here . Travel vaccines are purchased and administered at the expense of the traveler. You can set-up a travel vaccination by contacting your family physician or your local travel clinic.
