Action Plans and Updates

Our Path of Resilience Action Plan

In June 2022, the provincial government publicly launched Our Path of Resilience: An Action Plan to Promote Life and Prevent Suicide in Newfoundland and Labrador.  This plan was developed collaboratively with the Life Promotion Suicide Prevention Working Group whose members include community organizations, Indigenous partners, multiple government departments and people with lived experience of suicide loss.  Extensive consultation for this plan included 24 targeted in-person sessions in communities across the province, as well as consultations with the Indigenous Health Team, the Recovery Council and the Mental Health and Addictions Advisory Council and national partners.

Budget 2022 includes $2.5 million to begin implementing the Action Plan, with a commitment of approximately $4.5 million annually for the next four years.  This 5-year plan outlines 12 action items under the following categories:

  • Community mental health literacy and capacity building;
  • Socially-equitable prevention, intervention and follow-up services; and
  • Monitoring, surveillance and research.

Our Path of Resilience will foster a culture of compassion, understanding and action across health, education, justice, and social services systems by supporting the role of people with lived experience as experts and partners in system reform.

Provincial Alcohol Action Plan

The Provincial Alcohol Action Plan: Reducing Harms and Costs in Newfoundland and Labrador sets a path to prevent and reduce alcohol-related harms through a strong collective, public health-based approach and commitment by all partners; one that includes supports and services tailored for individuals identified as higher risk to encounter alcohol-related harm. This plan also acknowledges and values Indigenous-led approaches to reduce alcohol-related harm, and supports Indigenous-led strategies and programs for Innu, Inuit and Mi’Kmaq peoples and communities in Newfoundland and Labrador. Continued partnerships with Elders and other Indigenous leaders and organizations is vital to ensure culturally relevant and specific strategies are considered.

Towards Recovery Action Plan

In March 2017, the All-Party Committee on Mental Health and Addictions released Towards Recovery: A Vision for a Renewed Mental Health and Addictions System for Newfoundland and Labrador.

The report led to the release of Towards Recovery: the Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan in June 2017 to respond to the Committee’s 54 recommendations. The goals were to address service gaps, support what was working well in the mental health and addictions system and provide direction for mental health and addictions policy and programs to better meet the needs of residents.

The Department of Health and Community Services led the five-year action plan (2017-2022) in collaboration with multiple partners including people with lived experience to transform the system into one that is comprehensive, evidence based, integrated, person-centered system and provides the right care, at the right time and in the right place,

All 54 recommendations were substantially complete as of March 31, 2022.
