Child Care, Schools and Other Institutional Settings

To ensure that the health of people who occupy institutional settings is protected from illness and injury, Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) carry out routine inspections of the following types of care and/or institutional settings.

  • Child care centres
  • Family child care homes
  • Personal care homes
  • Long Term Care Facilities
  • Schools

Inspections are necessary to ensure that those in care at these institutions are not exposed to hazards that may jeopardize their health and safety. Institutional settings have people being cared for who are often at an increased risk of disease and illness. This is especially the case with young children and the elderly.

Inspections occur annually for personal care homes, long term care facilities, family child care homes, child care centres and schools.
