Our health is important to us all.
We know that there are challenges to our health care system and that is why we created Health Accord NL – an opportunity to reimagine the health care system.
What’s Happening
We are taking immediate steps to improve the health care system, in particular access to primary health care. Some of these steps include:
- Initiatives to address surgery backlogs and waitlists; such as the partnership with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute to address the waitlist for cardiac surgery; fly-in/fly-out cardiac catheterization procedures for patients in other regions of the province; increased regional caps on cataract surgeries in non-hospital facilities; hip and knee joint replacement surgeries on an outpatient basis for suitable candidates; and additional surgical opportunities for hip and knee joint replacement surgeries in Carbonear and St. Anthony.
- A task force of health care providers was also established in June of last year to tackle the current surgical backlog and provide meaningful solutions.
- Provincial Government announced five new seats will be added to the Family Medicine Residency Program for International Medical Graduates at Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine. Successful applicants will begin their training on July 1, 2023. These additional seats provide a pathway for International Medical Graduates who want to return to Canada to practice medicine and will help to increase the supply of medical professionals.
- Communities and every partner in health care play a role in helping people find and see the unique value and experience of working in Newfoundland and Labrador. If you know someone who is looking to come home or call Newfoundland and Labrador home, share our Extraordinary Every Day campaign with them and tell them why Newfoundland and Labrador is a great place to live and work.
