Overview
The Office of the Provincial Medical Director (OPMD) is responsible for providing medical authorization, protocols and clinical practice guidelines for all paramedicine providers working with Newfoundland and Labrador’s publicly funded ground ambulance program and the provincial critical care air ambulance program, MedFlight NL. The OPMD supports paramedicine practice by providing a 24/7 Online Medical Control Service linking EMS physicians to paramedicine providers and is responsible for leadership in education and quality initiatives.
OBTAINING MEDICAL AUTHORIZATION
Practitioners wishing to work within the provincially funded road ambulance program must hold both a paramedicine provider license from Newfoundland and Labrador Paramedicine Regulation (NLPR) and active Medical Authorization from the OPMD. To obtain medical authorization, practitioners must:
- Hold a valid license from NLPR.
- Submit an application for medical authorization.
- Successfully complete a protocol examination for their training level.
- Successfully compete mandatory learning modules as directed by the Provincial Medical Director.
The protocol exams are based on the Patient Care Protocols for each available registration level and are available below. Practitioners can access the protocol examination and learning modules by providing an application for medical authorization form to OPMD.
