A Common Vision for Increasing Physical Activity and Reducing Sedentary Living In Canada: Let’s Get Moving! (2018)

On May 31, 2018, Federal, Provincial and Territorial Governments released the first policy document on physical activity called “A Common Vision for Increasing Physical Activity and Reducing Sedentary Living in Canada- Let’s Get Moving!” (Common Vision).

The Common Vision aligns with and supports the goals and objectives of existing policies, strategies and frameworks in Canada including the Canadian Sport Policy (2012), Framework for Recreation in Canada 2015: Pathways to Well-being, Active Canada 20/20: A Physical Activity Strategy and Change Agenda for Canada (2012), amongst others.

Within the Common Vision there are six areas of focus that were identified to assist in providing directions and examples on how organizations, communities and government can activate each area. These six areas include cultural norms, spaces and places, public engagement, partnerships, leadership and learning and progress.

Framework for Recreation In Canada: Pathways to Well-Being (2015)

The Framework for Recreation in Canada: Pathways to Well-Being is the guiding document for public recreation providers in Canada. It envisions a Canada where every individual is engaged in meaningful, accessible recreation experiences that foster individual, community and environmental well-being.

The Framework brings together work being done across the sport, physical activity recreation, parks, environmental and health sectors to improve the well-being of Canadians. It aligns with and complements existing policies like Active Canada 20/20, Healthy Aging in Canada and IndigenACTION (2010).

The Framework describes five goals and priorities for action under each goal. The five goals are active living, inclusion and access, connecting people and nature, supportive environments, and recreation capacity.

Canadian Sport Policy (2012)

The Canadian Sport Policy (CSP 2012) sets a direction for the period 2012-2022 for all governments, institutions and organizations that are committed to realizing the positive impacts of sport on individuals, communities and society. CSP 2012 encourages the development of new partnerships with local and national, domestic and international, sport and non-sport partners.

CSP 2012 impacts the practice and provision of sport in all its forms and contexts, including organized and unorganized, in schools, colleges and universities, parks, and public and private sport centers.

Through five goals, the Policy aims to increase the number and diversity of Canadians participating in sport over the timeframe of 2012-2022. These five goals are introduction to sport, recreational sport, competitive sport, high performance sport, and sport for development.
