Understanding Changes Everything

Mental illness and addiction touches the lives of many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. 1 in 5 people in this province will experience mental illness or addiction first hand this year. But really when 20% of our friends, family, neighbours, children, and coworkers are affected, we all are. That’s why the Department of Health and Community Services has launched a campaign to help raise awareness and to reduce the stigma that exists around mental illness and addiction.Mental illness and addiction are treatable illnesses, and many people living with these conditions live very full, successful lives. But help and treatment play a pivotal role in creating positive outcomes. Talking about it, creating a society that accepts and supports people in times of illness, as well as recovery, is something we can do together. All it takes is a little kindness and understanding.
