Provincial Wait Time Benchmark Update: Q1/Q2 2014-2015

Provincial wait time information from April to September of 2014-2015 shows that benchmark performance in Newfoundland and Labrador continues to be strong. On average 95 per cent of patients accessed care within the recommended time frames, which is above the national target of 90 per cent.

Provincial data results for these first two quarters combined show that:

  • Almost all (98%) of newly diagnosed cancer patients commenced radiation treatment within the 28 day benchmark;
  • More than nine out of 10 (96%) of cardiac bypass surgeries were performed within the 182 day benchmark;
  • More than nine out of 10 (96%) cataract cases on the first eye were performed within 112 days;
  • More than nine out of 10 (96%) hip replacements were completed within the recommended benchmark of 182 days;
  • Nine out of 10 (92%) knee replacements were completed within the recommended benchmark of 182 days; and,
  • Eight out of 10 (84%) patients underwent hip fracture surgery within the benchmark of 48 hours.

Notes: In keeping with data standards, outliers or cases that do not comply with the standard wait time definitions are excluded from cataract wait time calculations and Eastern and Central Regional Health Authorities are working to address this. In the Labrador-Grenfell region, a low number (DS) of hip replacements, knee replacements and hip fracture surgeries were performed this quarter. First eye (FE) cataract procedures were completed during a sessional visit by the iterant specialist.
