Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

The Provincial Apprenticeship and Certification Board recognizes that learning, acquired from work, life experiences, and other formal training, may be equivalent to certain components of apprenticeship training programs.

Recognition of prior learning is a process by which previous learning can be possibly used to reach advanced standing towards skilled trades certification, either as an apprentice, a trade qualifier, or through credential recognition.

As a potential apprentice in Newfoundland and Labrador

If you have no recent work experience in the trade of your choice: contact a college which offers training in that trade to enroll in an entry level program. The college can advise you of their specific recognition of prior learning practices.

If you have recent work experience or are currently employed in the trade: contact an Apprenticeship Program Officer to discuss your options.

If you are or have been an apprentice in another Canadian province or territory, or have completed training recognized by the body governing apprenticeship in another Canadian province or territory: contact an Apprenticeship Program Officer to discuss your options.
