How to Become an Apprenticeship Employer

When an employer has:

  • an employee who wishes to become a registered apprentice, and
  • a certified journeyperson in the same trade on staff

The employer can sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) or letter of understanding (LOU), with the potential apprentice and the Apprenticeship and Trades Certification Division.

The MOU and LOU are written agreements entered into between an employer and employee, under which the employer agrees to release the employee from work for specified periods of time, so that the employee can learn the occupation and obtain the required work experience as outlined in a plan of training.
