Self-Study Program (SSP)

The Self-Study Program is available to assist apprentices and trade qualifiers who completed at least two unsuccessful attempts at a level examination, a provincial certification examination or a Red Seal examination (refer to specific eligibility criteria below).

Benefits of the SSP

  • provides learning objectives;
  • stimulates recall of prior learning;
  • provides exam results breakdown to identify strengths and weaknesses; and
  • provides organization and structure for study purposes.

In the Self-Study Program, participants will:

  1. attend a group counselling session (by teleconference);
  2. receive a participant kit;
  3. study for the exam for a minimum of 30 days;
  4. after 30 days (up to 90 days) when ready to rewrite, return the completion-agreement form (found below) by email to selfstudyplan@gov.nl.ca; and
  5. receive email verification of program completion, and approval to register for another exam rewrite.

Apprentice – Eligibility Criteria

  • at least two unsuccessful attempts at the level or Red Seal exam;
  • completed the latest exam attempt within the previous 10 years; and
  • active in your trade during the last two years.

Trade Qualifier – Eligibility Criteria

  • at least three unsuccessful attempts at the Red Seal exam;
  • completed refresher training;
  • completed the latest exam attempt within the previous 10 years; and
  • active in your trade during the last two years.

How To Apply

  1.  Contact your Apprenticeship Program Officer to discuss participating in the SSP, and request a referral.
  2.  Complete a Self-Study Program Registration Form.
  3.  Email the registration form to selfstudyplan@gov.nl.ca.

Counselling Session Accommodations

Candidates with a documented learning disability or mental health disability, or language barrier will be scheduled for an individual counselling session rather than a group session (date/time will be arranged). On the Self-Study Program Registration Form, select “Yes” in response to the question: “Have you received accommodations in an exam in the past?”

Deadline to Apply

Candidates must submit the Self Study Program registration form (found above) no later than five business days prior to the date of the counselling session selected.

Decision-Making Process:  The Self-Study Program Development Specialist (PDS) will review registration form, confirm the referral from an Apprenticeship Program Officer; and may contact the candidate to obtain any missing information. The Self-Study Program Development Specialist will schedule the counselling session, and send an email confirming registration for the session.

SSP Participant Kit

Candidates will receive a subsequent email, before the date of the counselling session, which will include a participant “kit”. The kit is a collection of resource documents that will help candidates study and prepare for the exam rewrite.

Please note:  It is important to review all the documents before the Group Counselling Session takes place.

Group Counselling Session (attendance is mandatory)

  • is led by teleconference call (for approximately 60 minutes);
  • offers guidance to help prepare for the rewrite exam;
  • reviews the documents sent previously by email, and discusses how to use them properly;
  • a counselling session is available each month for level exams and Red Seal exams – one session per candidate; and
  • if unable to make the session, a candidate must email selfstudyplan@gov.nl.ca to notify the Coordinator. A new form will need to be emailed to selfstudyplan@gov.nl.ca to register for a future counselling date.
  • a counselling session reference guide is available for candidates to use while completing their period of self-study. Click the link below for the appropriate guide.

Approval to Re-write the Exam

After completing the counselling session and the self-study period of a minimum of 30 days (up to 90 days), SSP participants must return the completion/agreement form (found below) by email to selfstudyplan@gov.nl.ca.
