Insulators (Heat and Frost) work with insulating materials to prevent or reduce the passage of heat, cold, vapor, moisture, sound or fire. They read drawings and specifications, select the insulation, and measure and cut insulating material. They apply, install, and maintain insulating material. They lay out and fabricate parts on-site, or remove or seal off old insulation. Types of insulating materials include calcium silicate, ceramic fiber, elastomeric foam, nano-like technology, mineral fiber, fiberglass, polyurethane, polystyrene and cellular glass. They are used for plumbing, air handling, exhaust, heating, cooling and refrigeration, piping equipment, pressure vessels and storage tanks, as well as for buildings, industrial complexes and ships.

Removing old insulating material such as asbestos, ceramic fibers, lead and mold is part of the trade. Spraying insulating materials and installing fireproofing and fire stop systems are specialized parts of the trade. Work is with residential, industrial, commercial and institutional projects, and they are employed by governments, construction companies, insulation contractors and industrial plants, or are self-employed.
