Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) Trade Profile

Industrial mechanics (millwrights) work on industrial and mechanical equipment, including mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, fuel, lubrication, cooling and exhaust systems. They work on pumps, gear boxes, fans, tanks, conveyors, presses, generators, prime movers, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, robotics and automated equipment. They are responsible for assembling, installing, commissioning, maintaining, and decommissioning equipment, welding, cutting, rigging, machining, and preparing bases. They use hand and power tools, and lathes, milling machines, drill presses and grinders. Rigging, hoisting/lifting and moving equipment are used to position machines and parts.

Industrial mechanics (millwrights) are employed in sectors including mining, petrochemical, power generation, manufacturing, forestry, and processing facilities. They work in confined spaces, underground, at heights, with heavy equipment, requiring standing, kneeling and lifting of materials. They have overlapping skills with steamfitter/pipefitters, industrial instrument mechanics, power engineers, welders, machinists and industrial electricians. They work in specialized areas such as vibration analysis, thermography, tribology, and laser/optical alignment, and may advance to other positions such as supervisor, superintendent, manager, or instructor.   (https://www.red-seal.ca/docms/imm_tp2017_eng.pdf)
